The first anti-cruelty bill was mainly made to stop bull-baiting. It was introduced by Parliament in 1800. -
Horse and Cattle
In 1822 Colonel Richard Martin succeeded in passing an act in the House of Commons which prevented cruelty to larger domestic animals like horse and cattle. -
The first animal protection group
The first animal protection group was founded by Henry Bergh in April 1866, in the U.S. They called the group the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). -
Cruelty to Animals Act
The first law to regulate animal experimentation was Cruelty to Animals Act of 1876. It was passed by the parliament of the United Kingdom. -
Puppy mills
Puppy mills originally started in the post World War ll era. Midwestern farmers looking for another crop, reacted to the growing need and want for puppies. This resulted in the making of the first puppy business. -
Humane Society
The Humane Society is a non-profit organization that is one of the most effective animal protection organizations, and it was made on November 24, 1954. -
Animal Cruelty
In 1960 the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act was made, and in 1982 that act was amended. -
Animal Welfare Act
In 2006 the Animal Welfare Act makes the owners and keepers responsible for protecting the needs of their animals are met. The first animal welfare act was made in 1966 for the growing concern of dogs and cats used in research. It was originally called the Laboratory Animal Welfare Act. -
Animals in Shelters
The most amount animals that have been in shelters was in 2011. In 2011 there was 7.2 million companion animals in shelters. In 2011 about 2.6 million of those animals in shelters were euthanized because of the shelter overcrowding. -
