Before America
I was born in 1850. I had lived in China until I was about 15 years old. I was in charge of providing for my family, ever since the death of my father in 1860. I needed to make more money, so I decided that our family should move to America. This way, I can find work, and make a lot more money for my family. It will be very hard, because I need to provide for 4 people. I live with my mom, my younger sister, and two younger brothers. -
Death of Father
My father died 5 years ago, in 1860. All of my life, my father took care of my family. He was a very nice man. Ever since his death, it has been a very difficult life. I am responsible for caring for the whole family. I'm having a difficult time providing for everyone. I decided that we need to move to America, so that I can get a job and money. -
Death of Brother
After we had moved to America, my brother and I each found a job. We were hired to work on the Trancontinental Railroad together. One day, during blasting, he was injured. We couldn't properly treat his wounds. Nobody had the materials back then. He couldn't hold on anymore, and just a few hours later, he died. I wish I could have saved him. -
Robbery
I was on my way home work one day. I heard a noise behind me, and next thing I know, I was on the ground. I was hired when they fired an American. I worked longer hours for less money. This man that was fired wanted revenge against me. He knocked me down and took all of my money. I was left with only a little bit of money. -
Back to China
After living in America for about 10 years, we decided to move back to our home country, China. I have worked many years, as well as my younger brother. We are no longer poor. When we move back to China, It will just be my mom, younger brother, younger sister, and I. I wish my father and other brother would still be alive to see our success. Compared to the others in the Chinese community, we are very wealthy. We plan on helping as many families as possible, because we know how it feels. -
Saving Boy
One day, as I was working at the railroad, there was an explosion. I rushed over to save a stranger from the explosion. Saving this boy's life was one of the best things I have ever done. I also got a reward out of it for being a good citizen. His brother gave me a large reward. Ever since then, I have had more money to help my family. I also got a better paying job.
