    Volcanic Explosion

    A volcanic explosion on the island of Santorini creates tidal waves and earthquakes that destroy the Minoan civilization.

    The First Persian War

    After the battle a massager called Pheidipides ran all the way to Athens from the battlefield to tell the Athenians that the Greeks they had won. He ran so fast he exhausted himself and died.
  • 480 BCE

    The Battle of Thermopylae

    The Battle of Thermopylae. A new Persian king invades with a huge force. The Greeks hold the Persians at a narrow pass by Thermopylae. After the main Greek force had retreated, King Leonidas continued to hold the pass for another three days with three hundred Spartan warriors. They are eventually surrounded but fight to the death. Their heroic stand inspires the Greeks to continue their fight against the Persians.
  • Period: 431 BCE to 404 BCE

    The Peloponnesian Wars

    Athens and Sparta continued to distrust each other and The Peloponnesian Wars began. The Peloponnesian wars were fought between Athens and Sparta and they fought several wars between 431 BC and 404 BC ultimately resulting in the defeat of Athens. After the war, Sparta instated the 30 Tyrants to rule over Athens but the 30 Tyrants were eventually disposed of.

    The catapult was invented at Syracuse.

    Alexander The Great

    When Alexander became king he carried out the plans his father had set in place which was to invade Asia. He first attacked The Persian Empire, defeated the Persian Great King and then continued through the known world to Egypt and India.

    Romans Invade Greece

    Romans invade and conquer the Greek Empire. After years of civil wars, Greece's city-states prosper once again under the rule of the Romans, who greatly admire Greek culture.
