  • Emancipation Proclamation

    President Abraham Lincoln issued this on September 22, 1862 as the nation approached its third year of the Civil War. It granted freedom to the slaves in the Confederate States if the States did not return to the Union by January 1, 1863. Under this proclamation, the Union would have to win for the slaves to be granted freedom.

    A major battle where the North not only wins the battle, but begins to win the War as well. The Confederates are defeated at the Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania.

    President Abraham Lincoln delivered this speech at a ceremony to dedicate a part of the Gettysburg battlefield as a cemetery for those who had lost their lives in battle. In his address, he speaks of human equality and connects it to the sacrifices of the Civil War. He promotes the importance of preserving the Union and its ideal of self-government.

    General Robert E. Lee surrenders his Confederate Army to Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Court House in VA. Grant allows Rebel officers to keep their guns and permits soldiers to keep horses and mules.
