  • Navigation Acts

    The Navigation Acts were laws passed by England to maintain control over colonial trade. The Acts made colonists buy English goods and limited trade between the colonies and other countries.
  • Writs of assistance

    Colonist were smuggling goods.This way they can nit be taxed by the British. thus made it legal for British soldiers to search any property looking for goods. The British passed the Writs of Assistance in 1765.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    This was meant to keep the natives and colonist from fighting.It makes the colonist angry because they cannot go west past the Appalachian Mountains.
  • Treaty of Paris

    The document that ended the war between the British and the French that was fought over the Ohio river Valley. This treaty ended French power in North America and expanded British territory.
  • Sugar act.

    The Sugar and Molasses Act of 1733, was about to expire.It required colonists to pay a tax of 6 pence. Most colonists worked around it and didn't pay.
  • Stamp act of 1765

    The British are not making enough money to pay or the French and Indian War.They required all colonist to purchase stamps,and stamp marks, from England on every piece of legal paper and other printed papers.
  • Quartering Acts of 1765

    The British want to make sure the colonist are doing what they are told,so they send over 10,000 British troops to the colonies. This requires all colonist to house British soldiers and provide them with supplies. The colonist must pay the cost to provide housing/supplies. Most troops in New York, but they are also in Boston. This is not an optional measure, you must take them if they are at your door.
  • Assistance of 1765

  • Stamp Act of congress

    Required them to pay a tax on every piece of printed paper they used. legal documents, licenses, newspapers, other publications, and even playing cards were taxed.
  • Declaratory act

    The Parliament repealed the Stamp Act and simultaneously passed the Declaratory Act, which claimed that Britain had the right to tax the American colonies. It stated that the British Parliament's taxing authority was the same in America as in Great Britain.
  • Townshend Acts of 1767

    The King finance minister, Charles Townshend, had a plan to raise revenue in the colonist.The British pass the Townshend Acts in 1767. He believed taxing goods before before they got into the colonist would make the colonist less angry. No more meetings,or assemblies, in New York until every troop is housed by New Yorkers. Important taxes for goods coming into the colonies was Paper,Glass,Paint,Tea.
  • Boston massacre

    killing five American civilians.The argument began to escalate as more colonists gathered and began to harass and throw sticks and snowballs at Private White.in which British Army soldiers shot and killed five people while under attack.
  • Boston tea party

    Massachusetts. American colonists, frustrated and angry at Britain for imposing “taxation without representation,” They dumped 342 chests of British tea into the harbor.The Boston Tea Party was a political and mercantile protest by the Sons of Liberty in Boston, Massachusetts, on December 16, 1773.
  • Coercive Acts

    The Coercive Acts describe a series of laws passed by the British Parliament in 1774, relating to Britain's colonies in North America.the Coercive Acts included: The Boston Port Act, which closed the port of Boston until damages from the Boston Tea Party were paid.
  • First continental congress

    The Committees of Correspondence organize the first meeting of the colonies. Meet in September 1774,in Philadelphia; All except Georgia, but supported decisions. Voted to ban all trade with Britain until Intolerable Acts were repealed.Voted on Union of colonies , but wanted to uphold colonial rights.
  • Second Continental Congress

    Second Continental Congress meets Philadelphia may 10th. Agreed to make an army. Name George Washington the general.Authorize printing of money to pay soldiers.
  • Olive Branch Petition

    Olives historical symbolize peace. They blamed the king and parliament for what was happening but wanted to avoid war. King rejects the petition.Sends 30,000 German mercenaries,hired German soldiers- Hessions to fight with British.
  • Battle of Lexington and concord second continental congress

    After fighting at Lexington and Concord, the minutemen gathered around Boston. Numbers were around 20,000, General Gage retreats into the city of Boston becuase it as surrounded by water.
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    Alarmed the British attack with 2,200 soldiers. Colonist colonel William Prescott ordered minutemen, "don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes"!
  • Common Sense

    Most colonist wanted to avoid war with England. Discussed that all monarchies were corrupt. Pamphlet created by Thomas Paine. The idea for independence was now loud.
