    The Armana Period

    Akhenaten was one of the pharaohs of the 18th dynasty. He chose to rename himself after his conversion to the religion of the Aten. He is also know as the 'heretic king' and and one of the biggest things he did was change religion in Egypt.

    Change in religion

    When Akhenaten took the throne he was known as Amenhotep IV but he changed his name when he made his conversion to the cult of Aten. After a few years of being pharaoh he abolished the other gods and made Aten the only god (the first monotheism religion). This impacted a lot of people especially the priest as they were basically out of jobs.

    Akhenaten moves the capital from Thebes to Akhetaten, his newly made city located between Memphis and Thebes.

    Tutankhamun's reign

    Tutankhamen, the son Akhenaten (supposedly) reverses Akhenaten's reforms and restores Egypt to it's traditional religion.
    He also moved the capital back to Thebes.

    Nefertiti's death

    After this time there was no longer any mention of Akhenaten's wife so there is a possibility that she died.

    Ay's reign

    Ay, a vizier has a short reign after king tut and continues tut's polices.
  • 1323 BCE

    Tutankhamun's death

    There is speculation about him being assassinated however there is other evidence to suggest that he it was an accident or because of a cell disease.

    Horemheb's reign

    Even though Tutankhamen tried to restore and fix what happened in the reign of Akhenaten, Horemheb made it his mission to restore Egypt's culture and erase everything from the amana period.
    He did this by removing all Aten related things including defacing temples, artefacts, monuments, and destroying the city of Akhetaten.
    He basically tried to remove Akhenaten for Egyptian's history.
