Kite Runner and the history of Afghanistan

  • The orphanage

    When Amir was young, "Baba decided to build an orphanage"(13). Babas act of kindness reveals his passion to help others. He built this orphanage as a result of guilt he had by the acts he made
  • Hassan is born

    In a little shack, thats where, "Hassan was born in the winter of 1964"(6). Hassan is a Hazara child, thus his socioeconomic status is low which is shown becasue he was born in a shack not a hospital. His placement in society reveals what people like Hassan have to deal with.
  • Hassan's first word

    The first word Hassan said was "Amir"(11). By this one word we can infer multiple things about Amirs relationship with Hassan. For starters, Amir is obviously an idol to Hassan. Hassan views Amir as a royal person who he must obey to.
  • Monarchy

    After The King left, "Kabul awoke the next morning to find that the monarchy was a thing of the past"(36). The change of government status result in a new society. A community with new rules, therefore more opportunities for more people.
  • Amir doesn't see Hassan

    After Hasan was sexually asaulted, "for a week, I barley saw Hassan"(80). This shows a change in their friendship. Now Hassan is purposly avoiding Amir because h knows Amir saw it happen.
  • Hassan Kite Running

    After Hassans kite was cut, Amir "saw Hassan run a kite for the last time"(55). Despite the fact that this is the end of Hassan's kite running career, this also means that their friendship is diminishing. The sport of kite running was one way Hassan and Amir bonded, but now this helps hurt their relationship.
  • Hassan gets raped

    When Hassan attempts to retreve Amir's kite he is corned and then Assef "dropped his underwear. he positioned himself behind Hassan" (75). Since Assef has more power over Hassan he believes he is allowed to sexually asault him to teach him a lesson. One of the reasons he believes he can do this is becasue Hassan is a Hazara, which is basially someone with lower socioeconomic status compared to most.
  • Amir turns 13

    Amir "turned thirteen that summer of 1976"(93). This was an important year for their family because it was that year that Ali and Hassan left. This may cause Amir to question how he treated Hassan.
  • First Soviet troops in Afghanistan

    After The Soviet Union had decided, "The first Soviet troops parachuted into Kabul" (NY Article, 2)
  • Baba's idea

    After dicovering what was life like in the United States, "Baba [fell in] love [with] the idea of America" (125). Although he admires the American dream, he still must move there in order to live it. The quote also shows foreshadowing to a move to the United Sates, which may cause issues with their roots in Afghanistan.
  • Graduation

    After years of schooling, Amir "graduated from high school at the age of twenty" (131). Yet he is extremely old to be in high school, he still overcame this task and accomplished somthing that opens many opportunities. He now can go to a college and get a job.
  • Amir turns 21

    As soon as Amir turned 21, "Baba sold his Buick and bought a dilapidated '71 Volkswagen bus" (137). This generous gift shows that Baba thinks of Amir as an adult. With the new responcibility Amir has Baba has less to worry about Amir.
  • Baba's Cancer

    After a call for help, Amir "turned around and found Baba on the gorund. His arms and legs were jerking" (158). This situation shows that Baba's life is getting shorter, thus giving Amir more power. Baba now realizes that he has to rely on Amir to support him.
  • Amir wants to marry Soraya

    Amir asks, "I want you to ask Gerneral Taheri for his daughter's hand"(161). By asking Baba this, he feels he is valueable to Amir. This act brings them both together and strengthens their bond.
  • Amirs writing

    After writing his first story, "six weeks later, a man named Martin Greenwalt called from New York and offereed to represent me"(183). This quote shows that all of the hard work payed off. Since he now is geting his book noticed it opens many opportunnities to strengthen his writing.
  • Soviet troops

    Eventually, after the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, "the last Soviet troops left Afghanistan" (NY article, 2)
  • Mullah Omar

    After Mullah Omar attacked the group of warlords, his idea began to trend and "by the end of 1994 Mullah Omar had nearly 12,000 followers and was rolling up the warlords to the north and east" (NY Article, 2)
  • Mr. bin Laden relationship with Al Queda

    In addition to what the Taliban gave bin Laden, "The Taliban also provided a haven for Mr. bin Laden, who arrived by chartered jet at Jalabad Airport in May 1996, and for Al Queda" (NY Article, 3).
  • Strict enforcements

    The Taliban after they had taken over and started, "banning movies and forcing women out of schools and into all-enveloping burqa clothing" (Ny Article, 3).
  • Rahim Khan is sick

    After the urgent new Amir tells Soraya that "Rahim Khan is very sick"(191). This news changes Amirs mood and makes him remeber his past. He begins to realize and think about the things he did in Afghanistan.
  • USA Military invovled in Afghanistan

    After the terrist attack on 9/11/01, "The untied States has been involved in Afghanistan since 2001" (NY Times, 1)
  • Refuse to hand over bin Laden

    After the discovery of who did attack the twin towers, "President George W. Bush gave the Taliban an ultimatum to hand over Mr. bin Laden" (NY Article, 3). Unfortunatly for Afghanistan, the taliban said no.
  • The Taliban Resurgence

    Even though they were defeated, "the taliban continued to wage a guerrilla warfare from a base in the mountainous and largely lawless tribal area on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border" (NY Article, 3).
  • Obama deploys troops

    After long consideration, "Mr. Obama announced his plan to deploy 30,000 additional troops" (NY Article, 4).
  • Bring troops home

    During his speech and plan to deploy troops, "He vowed to start bringing American forces home from Afghanistan in the middle of 2011" (NY Article, 4)
