Inventions and Their Impacts (M.M.)

  • Invention of the Telephone

    Invention of the Telephone
Alexander Graham Bell invented and patented the telephone in Boston, Massachusetts forever changing the course of the country. He was not the first to invent the concept of the telephone, but he worked with businessmen and entrepreneurs to start the National Bell Telephone Company, which turned into AT&T. By 1900, 1.35 million telephones were in use in the United States making communication better than ever since they were able to relay messages with minutes instead of days.
  • Invention of the Light Bulb

    Invention of the Light Bulb
Thomas Edison invented the light bulb in New Jersey setting the framework for electricity and technology in the country forever. J.P. Morgan financed Edison Electric Illuminating Company, which supplied electricity to a small number of customers in New York City. Other companies were combined with Edison's to create Edison General Electric Company in 1889, known today as General Electric. This event relates to the telephone invention since it set the country down a new path.
  • Invention of the Model T Ford

Invention of the Model T Ford
Henry Ford invented the Model T Ford in Detroit , Michigan forever changing the landscape of the automobile history with innovation and efficiency. His focus was to mass produce automobiles that were not too expensive for Americans to buy, unlike the automobiles already on the market. By 1929, over 23 million automobiles were on American roads making transportation faster and cheaper for the country. Most Americans now use cars as their means of transportation for everyday life.
  • Invention of the Moving Assembly Line

Invention of the Moving Assembly Line
Henry Ford also invented the moving assembly line in Detroit, Michigan in an attempt to make producing a car cheaper and faster for the country. The time to build a car was reduced from 12 hours to a much shorter two and half hours, which effectively increased the production of his factories and aided Ford in hiring cheaper workers that only required training. Nearly all car companies in the U.S use the moving assembly line to mass produce cars with other factories using the invention as well.
  • Invention of the Supermarket

    Invention of the Supermarket
Clarence Saunders invented the concept of the supermarket with the first Piggly Wiggly store in Memphis, Tennessee. It was the first store to offer self service, shopping baskets, and price marked items, which lead to reduced costs and cheaper grocery items. Stores, such as, Walmart, Target, and Kroger, have followed this model to become profitable companies that provide cheap necessary grocery items. This invention lead to a change in the nation that has shown its impact today.
  • Invention of the Liquid Fueled Rocket

Invention of the Liquid Fueled Rocket
Robert Goddard invented the liquid fueled rocket in Auburn, Massachusetts impacting space travel forever. He used liquid oxygen and gasoline, which was used for the first satellite, Sputnik, and is the choice for human missions to space to this day. Without this invention, flying a rocket into space may have never been possible. This invention links together with the others because it changed the way the nation viewed space travel and lead to progress.
