Lincoln took office in march of 1861. He won the election of 1860 beating John C. Breckinridge, John Bell, and Stephen A. Douglas. He would be president for 4 years until his murder in 1865. -
the Civil War begins
The civil War began mostly because there was an argument about if your could own slaves or not. The people who thought you could own them succeeded from the United States of America and created the Confederate States of America. This was not good because Abraham Lincoln thought that a nation divided wasn't a good nation. The two nations were getting heated and the Confederates started the war by attack fort Sumter; there was no human deaths just a Confederate horse. -
Battle of Bull Run
The Battle of Bull Run or the Battle of Manassas was the first major battle of the civil war. It started on July 16 and ended on July 21 and took place in Virginia. It ended with a Confederate victory. -

Battle of Gettysburg
In the summer of 1863 general Robert E. Lee marched 75,000 men north to invade union territory a small force of union cavalry met them there unplanned They fought the south and got pushed back into Gettysburg and got a strong defensive position Lee ordered to attack before the union Unfortunately he hesitated and the union had a strong defensive position It was impossible to overrun them so the south didn’t attack Instead they camped out to fight the next day. -

Jenny and Shad getting marry is a big moment because getting marred is a big part of life. Also Matt her father gave her consent to marry and this is big because it shows he trusts her. -

Ulysses Grant getting promoted is big because he's leading the whole Union Army. This is a big deal because you have all the responsibility, you have all these men with family at home, and its very stressful. -
Union troops take control of Atlanta
The Union taking control of Atlanta was important because it was a important city for the south's economics. The Union knew that if they took Atlanta the war would be over soon because it cut off a large portion of the Souths supplies leading them to not have enough food or military supplies for the war. -
General Sherman begins march to sea
Sherman's March to the sea is important because it was the last big thing to end the war. This was a tipping point for the war because he burned down towns and twisted rail roads so they couldn't get food or supplies easily. This end the war because without supplies or food you cant do anything. -
Lee surrenders to Grant at Appomattox Court House
Lee surrendering is big because its the end of a war. There's no more fighting or putting peoples lives at risk on the battle field no more stress. It was also big because even though the union had bigger army's and more supplies General Lee would always win because he was the best general and they defeated him. -
Lincoln is murdered by John Wilkes
Lincoln getting killed is very important because he was our president and one of the best too. a president getting killed made the hole country sad. It also sucks that people are mad at him because the south lost the war and that he was trying to do the right thing.
