A timeline of my technology use over my teaching career (2007 - present)

    My early teaching career

In my early teaching career, my desks were in rows and most of my teaching included direction instruction with only the occasional partner work. I used an overhead projector with transparencies to fill out guided notes with students. Not many technology tools were used in my classroom besides my desktop computer and basic scientific calculators. We would occasionally take our math classes to computer labs and use Carnegie Learning and Khan Academy to help build math skills.

    The Introduction of SMART boards

In 2010, all of our classrooms received a SMART board. As math teachers, we used a divide and conquer approach by creating SMART notebook slides that would help make our lessons more interactive and bring in the use of videos and Internet websites to help enhance our instruction more than just filling out guided notes on overhead transparencies. While a SMART board may have been a direct substitution of tech the first year, as I played around with SMART tech, my lessons began to be transformed.

    My school goes 1:1

Our school is now 1:1, and every student has a Chromebook. I now use many more tech tools to facilitate a more active lesson experience for my student learners. I enjoy using Nearpod and Pear Deck for lesson instruction to poll students on prior knowledge, formative assessment data, and for student pace differentiation. Our school also now has classroom sets of graphing calculators for students to use. I use the Canvas learning management system to post notes, homework, and skill checks/quizzes.

    (re)Designing Instruction

After undertaking a redesign on one of my instructional units, I now have more ideas for bringing technology activities into my classroom. I feel passionate about not only using game-based learning when reviewing but also as a formative assessment piece and with the introduction of new concepts. Students are highly engaged with this approach. I'm also finding new ways to incorporate graphing calculator activities in my lessons. I continue to try to use technology to transform my instruction.

    Looking ahead

In the next two years, I would like to have all of my lessons on an interactive tool like Nearpod or Pear Deck. I would also like to become more comfortable using Google products that incorporate math equation editors like EquatIO and Google Forms.
