The Soviet Union launched a 27 year old man in space. His name was Yuri Gagarin and he was the first to see that the Earth was mostly made up of water. -

Papa and Dominic Leave for West Berlin to see if they can find a house for the family. -
Berlin Wall being Built
In the middle of the night East Berlin become enclosed in a wall that was meant to keep people in East Berlin in, and people in West Berlin outside of East Berlin. This left Papa and Dominic not able to come back to East Berlin -
Presidnent Kennedy is Assassignated
John F. Kennedy was killed in Dallas, Texas by Lee Oswald. He was in an open top convertible in a parade. Oswald fired 3 shots that killed President Kennedy. -
Civil Rights Act
This act is to stop discrimination of race, religion, gender, etc. President Johnson signed this bill into law, but it was created by President Kennedy. He was unable to sign the bill because he was assassinated. -
Gerta Sees Papa and Dominic
As Gerta is walking to school, she sees her father and brother over the top of the wall standing on a platform with other people. Her father makes a digging motion. This sparks an idea for Gerta. -
Peter is killed and Fritz is arrested
Anna's brother is killed trying to escape to West Berlin. Fritz is arrested the same day because he knew that Peter was trying to escape. -
Fritz is released from custody
Fritz is released from custody, but the whole house that Gerta's family lives in is bugged and cameras are installed. -
Fritz trys to escape
Fritz tells Gerta he is going to escape soon. He will try swimming the Spree River. He wants to be free and is willing to die trying so. Gerta then preaches her idea to him. -
Mama Leaves
Gerta's grandmother breaks her leg and can't get around without help. So Gerta's mother leaves to go and help her, leaving the kids by themselves for a few weeks. -
Construction of the Tunnel Begins
Since Mama is out of town, Gerta and Fritz begin Gertas idea. Which is digging a tunnel out of East Berlin. -
Caught!
Fritz and Gerta are digging the tunnel at night hoping the officer wouldn't come back. They start to hear footsteps and turn around to see Officer Muller. They make an agreement and they continue digging. -
Mama Returns
Since Mama has returned she can help with the tunnel. The only issue is that they only can dig a couple more days before Fritz has to report to military duty. -
Surprises
They are half way through digging when they hear noises coming from the other side. They realize its Papa and Dominic. -
Fritzs Reports to Military Duty
The tunnel is almost complete, but Fritz has to report to military duty. He decides not to go, which means the government comes and pokes around the house and Gerta and Mama make a run for it. -
West Berlin here we come
By the time Mama and Gerta make it to the tunnel. Its complete and Officer Muller's family and Anna's family are waiting to leave. They are half way through the tunnel, when Officer muller is shot and killed. -
Arrived
They finally make it to West Berlin. They are free at last! -
Immigration Act of 1965
The Immigration Act was put in place by President Lyndon Johnson. It was so that everybody from any part of the world would have an equal opportunity in the USA.
