When Salva was at school, the class heard a loud CRACK and gun shots. -

Salva kept hearing loud sounds like BOOM! He kept running and seeing black smoke behind him. Salva found his village and his group. They spent the night in an old barn. -

Salva knew why they left him because he was a child. Who might get tired and slow them down. A women from Salva's village let him in. She is leaving for the dry season and Salva doesn't know where to go. -

Salva doesn't have Marial or his Uncle. He sees this women in an orange head scarf. Salva thinks it is his mother. -
Salva in the refuge camp
The women wasn't his mom. He has to stay at the refuge camp for six years. -
Salva six years later.
The refuge camp is closing down. The government was collapsing. The soldiers wear chasing them to the river and driving them back to Sudan. -
Salva 1991-92
The soldiers pushed all the people into the river, Most of them got killed by wild animals, got shoot, or drowned. They all went down the current and survived. Salva and the other survivers went to Kenya where there are refuge camps. It took them a year and a half to get to Kenya. -
Salva Chapter 15 New York 1996
Salva got on the plane to New York. It was very different being on a plane for the first time. He got Coca-cola on the plane, that reminded him of when his dad brought it back from the market. When he landed his family was waiting at the gate. There was a mom and dad and four children. Salva was happy to have siblings again. When he stepped outside the airport the cold hit his face. It felt so different. -

Salva was on the computer and found out that his dad is alive. He flew back to Southern Sudan to try and see him. -
Nya
Nya is eleven years old. She had to walk a long way to get water. -

Nya got to the pond. She drank the brown muddy water. She filled the container and held it on the top of her head. It would take her a long time to get home. Longer than it took her to get to the pond. -

Nya and her family go to a lake to dig up water. They have to dig for a long time to get dirty water. -

Nya's little brother Akeer got sick from the dirty water from the pond. Nya doesn't now if she should take him to the doctor or let him rest. -

Nya went to the doctor with Akeer. Akeer felt good after the medicane the doctor gave him. -

Nya still can't tell what the workers are working on. She can tell the difference who was the boss and who wasn't. Know the workers where drilling a bigger hole in the ground. -
Nya at the new pond
Nya watched as water came out of the hole and filled the pond with water. Everyone was cheering and happy. Nya wasn't happy because the water wasn't clear, it was muddy and drown. -

Dep told Nya that the water is only muddy because it is still mixed in with the old water that they were using from the pond. -
