A Long Walk to Water

    Salva had to go somewhere with his village fallowing the rebels and then he found out that they left. So he is all alone.

    Salva was taken into the Dinka tribe that came upon him. AT first they rejected him but when a woman reached out ot one of the men he said that he would join the group. As the days of walking without any food got to Salva. He was ravenous but then he and Buska spotted honey.

    Salva is describing the pain that everyone is going through after the bees had stung them. Then they continued their journey. Salva stepped on a boy's hand that soon became a friend. Marial (the friend) was explaining how he also was trying to find his family and that is when Salva felt his pain. He said that they would travel east, but Salva didn't agree. He then a heard his name being called.

    There was a lion that came near the tribe. Salva's uncle kept trying to calm him down that he would always be there, that his friend Marial was okay and then they would find their family. Also they had to build canoes so that they can cross the water and get to Ethiopia.

    After a while on the water with the canoes they had built they pulled up on an island in the middle of the river which had a huge abundance of food(a change for the Dinka tribe). They soon got food and as Salva was sucking on a sugarcane it reminded him of home and how his father would sometimes for a treat bring mangoes home. Also when they went to sleep there were swarms of mosquitoes that came and woke them all up.

    The conflict that is shown is Character vs. Nature. This affected Salva's journey because of the difficulties that came along with the trip. The sun, hot sand, sharp plants and loosing his toenail.Making his journey even more difficult.

    Salva's town was invaded by rebels. There was a school shooting and they had to run out of the school. Salva couldn't find his family.

    When Salva awoke and realized no one was there and he was abandoned, he started to panic. He then noticed a woman in the distance who had a Dinka scar (his tribe) which was a relieve for him. He stayed with her until there was no more water in the pond and the pond turned into a puddle. She said she had to leave and that he couldn't fallow her. He soon started to panic again. Then in the horizon saw a group of men with Dinka scars.

    The "stranger" calling Salva's name turned out to be his uncle. Salva's father's youngest brother. Who had apparently been in the same tribe as Salva but since they were thirty people they couldn't find each other until now. Also towards the end of the chapter Salva's friend Marial disappeared probably looking for food.

    The important events that occur in chapter 10 of salva's story include the saying by sunset they would leave the dessert to leave for Ethiopia. Also they found out that the village that Salva and his family is from had been burned down, which makes him scared for his parents lives. Salva's uncle is going back to fight in the war. Men with guns and machetes came among the tribe and rummaged through all of there things.The men took Uncle's gun and with three shots, killed him.

    In this chapter Salva shows persistence by showing he is still strong after his friend Marial and his uncle died. He mentions that they would've wanted him to survive and finish the trip, which is why he overcame it and made him even more determined. He also says that in the camp he "will find his family".

    The changes that Salva went through aree him thinking that this lady was his mother but it wasn't. He also is struggling to realize that he is on his own now. No family no help. That his family would want him to survive and and to do something with his life.

    Over the years Salva's life has not been very different. Before soldiers have commanded him to run and to get out and now it is the same thing scared people running for their lives because into a river with crocodiles because of men with guns and weapons. Therefor it has not changes much.

    The difficult challenges Salva faces in this chapter include him having to swim away from guns in a crocodile infested river. He had also been forced into the water by a boy, luckly, because he would have been shot. After a few second but what seems like an eternity he emerges from the water and is now lying on the muddy ground trying to catch breaths. He had also become leader to a group of boys that had started fallowing him after exiting the river and they had to survive ......

    Salva is now 22 years old and is in Kakuma refuge camp and has spent years, but there were bad people there, people stole, it was in the middle of the desert and had just been a terrible camp.

    .....Even though it took the boys a 'year and a half" to get to Kenya. They did and safely too, "more then twelve hundred boys arrived safety to Kenya.

    This camp had been just as bad as Kakuma. Salva wants to leave the camp and go somewhere where he could get a good education. He had met a lot of aid workers and found one that started to help him learn English. He also learned how to play volleyball and soon found out about the news, this all started his interest in America. He's new dream had come true, he is going to America.

    In this chapter Salva shows perseverance when he encounters all these differences in New York and places that he passes on his way to New York. Including seeing new and different people and the temperature. All of this reminding him of his old family and old life which brought him sadness, but he continues on. On to his new life.

    The conflict that Salva goes through in this chapter is Character vs. Self because he had to decide whether or not to go back to find his father. Even with all the paperwork planing and organizing that this involved he knew that it was the right thing to do.
  • (Salva) Sudan and Rochester 2003-2007

    When Salva arrived at the place where is father was and wen he saw his face he was overjoyed and excitement was building up inside of him. He also soon found out that his mother was safe back in the village.When Salva returned back in Rochester he began to brainstorm ideas of how to help the people in Sudan with the Contaminated water. Which then encouraged him to give presentations to inform people about this issue. Every day he moved closer to his goal.

    Nya stepped on a rose with a thorn and started bleeding.

    She was entering a pond to collect water which brown and muddy. She filled her container all the way to the top, and soon realized it would take her longer to get home then it did to get there.

    When Nya returned home, her mother distributed the water into three large jars. Nya ate then was sent out again to the pond, but this time with her younger sister was slow and would just delay Nya. She has to walk to the pond and back, to the pond and back.

    Nya realized that her mother hates the lake camp that they go to. They had no house and had to sleep in the makeshift shelters. They could not bring most of their things so they had to make do with whatever was at hand. He mother also had fear for her husband and son to go hunting. Fearing that they might get injured or wont return.

    Many people that are drinking this water are getting illnesses that are dangerous. Including Nya's family members.

    Nya finds it hard to believe that the men will find water in her village because the earth was dry and rock-hard, which made her doubtful.

    Nya is teaching Akeer how to get the water. We find out that she has to go through a hard and long process. She has to dig up her water. She does this every day for seven months.

    They found out that the reason for Akeer's sickness was the dirty water they were drinking. They were told that Akeer must only drink clean water from now on. Which was a problem because they could only collect small amounts of water and if they boiled it half of it would be gone, evaporated.

    Some strange people came to talk to the chief and the oldest boys about the water problem that they hare having. They might be thinking about helping the village.

    I think that the strange men that arrived at Nya's village are trying to find water that is closer to the village that makes it so the people don't have to walk a full morning just for water.

    When Nya says "iron giraffe" she mean it is a crane. She is saying this because she doesn't know what the actual word for the machine is.

    As the strangers are trying to bring water to the village it seems as though there was a setback, a leak and that was when Nya realized who their boss was. The person who was earnestly talking to them.

    Everyone was enjoying the nice clean water that was now easily provided for the villagers. Even people form miles away would come to receive the fresh not muddy or dirty water. At the end of this chapter Nya walked up to the (Dinka)leader of the men who brought water to their village and said thank you. He replied with a smile and a question "what is your name" then after Nya introduced her self, as did he. Salva being his name.

    In this chapter the workers had found a way to bring water to the village easily as water was springing from the ground into the air everyone was celebrating except Nya. Nya had noticed that the water was not clear but "brown and heavy looking"

    The workers explained what they are doing with all these pipes and the big crane. They also explain why the water is muddy and how they will fix it. And yet again Nya is walking to get water.

    Nya notices the men standing outside her house talking to her father. Soon to find out they are clearing the area to build something.
