    Trail of Death
    The Trail of Death. Chief Menominee was the leader of the resistance and he had refused to sell his land. The treaty of 1836 forced tribes to move west of the Mississippi River, but he refused to. Even though he didn't sign the treaty, he and his people were forced to move. In 1837, they travelled from Logansport, IN to arrive in eastern Kansas on November 4, 1838. Father Benjamin Petit baptized and was in charge of the many sick people.

    The Trail of Tears. Forced migration in the US of the Northeast and Southeast Indians during 1830s. The discovery of gold on Cherokee land in Georgia started efforts to move all Indians east of the Mississippi River. The Indian Removal Act (1830) authorized the president to negotiate with tribes for land cessions and removal to western territories. Native people were forced from their homes, journeyed west. 15,000 died of disease.
