    Changu Narayan Temple
    The Changu Narayan Temple is the oldest temple in the Kathmandu Valley. This temple not only represents religion, but also the ancient architecture of Nepal. In ancient Nepal, the main elements used for religious architecture were stone, wood, and metal. There are plenty of art pieces that can be found inside the temple, such as the Garuda Idol and Vishnu Sculpture.

    Swayambhunath Stupa

    Swayambhunath Stupa
    This is an ancient Buddhist stupa located in Kathmandu. It is the most ancient stupa in Nepal. Hundreds of Buddhists come to this stupa every morning to pray. On each side of the building there is a pair of eyes that represents spirituality. Between the two eyes is the number one in the alphabet of Nepal. The Swayambhunath Stupa is also sometimes called the Monkey Temple because of the numerous amount of monkeys that wander the grounds of the stupa.

    Pashupatinath Temple is Created
    The Pashupatinath Temple is a major tourist attraction of Nepal that was constructed in the 13th century. The temple standing today is not the original one built. It is a Hindu temple in Deopatan that only Hindus are allowed to enter. Many traditions have been founded in the Pashupatinath Temple that have been celebrated for centuries, such as the tradition of cremating the dead at the temple, and then scattering the ashes into the Bagmhati River, which flows next to the Pashupatinath Temple.

    Bodhisattva from Early Malla Period
    This is a traditional statue from the period in which Nepal was ruled over by the Malla Kingdom. The Malla Kingdom reigned in Nepal from the 10th-18th century. The time that the Malla Kingdom ruled is known to Nepal as The Golden Age, because of the rich art and culture that was significant of this period. This statue represents a Bodhisattva, or religious figure. A 'bodhisattva' is defined as a person in the Buddhist religion who has reached spiritual enlightment.

    The Gurkha War was a war between Britian and Nepal that lasted from 1814-1816. The war was started when Nepal refused to let any British actions take place in their territory. Although Britian had more soldiers than Nepal, the war was a close fight. In the end, Britian won the war and the Sugauli Treaty was signed in 1816, which gave Britian some land in present-day India.

    Rana Rulers Come Into Power
    In 1846, the Rana rulers took over Nepal's government. The Ranas believed in a prime minister as a major political figure. Their prime minister was Jung Bahadur Rana. The Ranas were a tough government for their reign of 105 years, but in 1951 they were overthrown by King Tribhuvan.

    Nepal is admitted to the United Nations
    Nepal become a member of the United Nations on December 14, 1955. It was not one of the 51 original members of the United Nations, which had joined in 1945. Nepal had already been part of several seperate UN agencies before its admission to the UN, but this was a big step for Nepal because it was then able to connect with other countries and help solve world problems.

    Nepal Royal Family Massacre
    On June 1, 2001, Nepal was shocked by the news that their royal family had been murdered. Crown Prince Dipendra Shah, the son of the king and queen, had murdered 8 members of the royal family before killing himself. He had apparently committed this murder because his parents had forbidden him from marrying the woman he loved.
