  • The rise of departments tores

    From 1890 to 1920 there was a drastic increase in department stores across the nation.
  • The Depression

    When the stock market crashes in 1929, 1 out of 3 people are unemployed. This put a hault on sales for department stores. The economic hardships also caused many to go out of business.
  • Television broadcasting

    1942 - With television now available for purchase, department stores begin to make adverisements in hope of attracting customers to their stores.
  • The first indoor mall

    In 1956 the construction for the first indoor regional mall begins.

  • Hello Wal-Mart, Target, Kmart!

    1962 is the year Wal-Mart, Target, and Kmart open their doors to the public

    1967 - Kroger installs the first retail bar-code scanner in a Cincinnati supermarket
  • Now introducing... Home Depot!

    1978 - Home Depot opens its doors
  • Category Killers

    1980 - Retail focus turns from discount stores to category killers and club stores. Toys 'R' Us, Home Depot, Circuit City and Sam's Club came to prominence. Retail merger and acquisitions era begins.
  • Internet

    1982 - The term 'Internet' is used for the first time. It means a system to connect separate networks of computers - a network of networks.
  • WWW.

    1991 - The World Wide Web as we know it is born! The ability to combine words, pictures, and sounds on Web pages excites companies that see the potential for publishing information on the Internet in a way that can be as easy as using a word processor
  • The Internet Boom

    1996 - Nearly 10 million hosts online. The Internet covers the globe. The Age of the Internet has arrived.
  • 9/11

    September 11th marks the attack on the World Trade Center. Thousands of lives, billions of dollars and the country's sense of security were all lost in the horrible events that day in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.

    2005 - YouTube is put on the Internet
  • 2008 Recession

    In October of 2008 a recession starts. Many business start to go out of business (Circuit City)
