    Serapis Captured
    Throughout the Revolution the American's have virtrually no navy. One of the rare occasions and probably the most famous was the capturing of the powerful British warship Serapis. Captain John Paul Jones led this bold seize at highs seas.

    Attemped Recapture of Savannah Fails
    In 1778 the British forces invaded Savannah, Georgia and captured the city from the Americans. On October 9, 1779 the Americans attempted to recapture the city. A combined attack from the Americans and their French allies failed and lost significant casualties. Over 5,000 American and French land troops and more than 40 American and French ships were no match for the almost 3,000 British troops.

    The second winter of the continental army was one of the harshest they had to face. The army camped out in Morristown, NJ. It was the worst winter of the 18th century.

    After a long hard fought battle in Charelston, the Britsh captured the city. More than 200 Americans were killed in this battle but that wasnt the worst of it. More than 5,000 were captured as prisoners of war by the British. This was the largest loss of troops by the Contenental Army throughout the entrie war.

    Finally aid from France had finally arrived. On July 11, 1780 French troops arrived in Newport, RI. This gave American soldiers much needed troops and supplies for an advantage in the war.

    Benedict Arnold was an American general who was one of the American's best. He had won many victories in war but felt he had not recieved enough credit. So while Arnold was guarding West Point he decided to seceratley give it to the British. His plan was caught however and Arnold escaped with the British.

    65 Minute Battle
    On October 7, 1780 there was a short but important battle held at Kings Mountain, SC. Known as the Battle of Kings Mountain it was only 65 minutes long. Some 900 patriots surround and defeated 1,100 Britsh loyalists. More than 250 Britsh were killed, more than 150 wounded, and more than 650 captured comepared to only 29 Colonists killed and 58 colonists wounded. This was a turning point in the war.

    Nathanael Greene is Named Commander of the Southern Army
    On October 14, 1780 Nathanael Green was named commander of the Southern Contenential Army. He was a brilliant commander, probably only second to George Washington. He led Americans to many victorys throughout the war.

    General Morgan used important tactics to defeat the British in the Battle of Cowpens. He divided his soldiers into two lines, the front and back. He ordered the front line to retreat and thinking they were retreating the British charged forward. They ran right into the second line and in this way the American won the Battle of Cowpens.

    Some 900 Americans were up against 5,000 British soldiers in an attempt to slow the Britsh across the Catawaba River. There was no real winner but the Americn general William Lee Davidson was killed in battle. At Cowans Frod there was a brief battle where Davidson was killed.

    Articles of Confederation Adopted
    On March 2, 1781 the Articles of Confederation were adopted. They set rules for the United States government. They said that the United States could make war, solve diplomatic issues, and resolve their own issues. This was a big step for the US.

    Nathanael Green and Daniel Morgan combined their armies to fight the British at Guilford Courthouse in Huntersville, NC. It was an extremely bloody batlle which the Americans lost. However the British sustained great losses.

    British Cedes Fort Gamby to Patriots
    The British Major Andrew Maxwell ceded Fort Granby in South Carolina to Patriot Lieutenant Colonel Henry Lee. This gave the Americans a new fort in South Carolina. After a hard battle Maxwell finally surrendered the fort on May 15 to Lee.

    French Drive British Navy From Chesapeake Bay
    On September 15 the British were drive by the French in a huge naval battle. The French fleet had more ships than the British and drove them back to New York. This allowed the American troops to advance past Cheapeake Bay.

    On October 19, 1781 General Cornwallis surrenderd to the Americans. This marked the Americans victory over the British in the American Revolution. In the Battle of Yorktown, the Americans trapped the British on the Yorktown Penninsula. They laid seige on the British until Cornwallis finally surrenderd on October 19.

    On July 11, 1782 almost a year after the British finally surenederd to the Americans, the British evacuated Savannah, GA. This was one of the Britishs main citys that they occupied so after they left colonists cheered.

    On November 30, 1782 the British and Americans signed preimanary Articles of Peace. This was a major step towards officially ending the American Revolution.

    On April 19, 1783 the American congress ratified the preliminary Treaty of Paris. To ratifiy means to approve and by doing this the Americans were one step away from being a free and independant country.

    Treaty of Paris
    On September 3, 1783 the Treaty of Paris was signed by both countries, America and Britian. It garanteed the Americans freedom from Britian and the end of the Revolutionary War. With the treaty, there were 10 Articles that divided land, made laws and more. With the Treaty of Paris there was many consequences but many positive outcomes for both countries and France and Spain.
