  • Germany invades Poland

    Hitler's attack on Poland was without decleration of war. Britain and France mobilized their forces and prepared to wage war or Germany. Germany soon made great progress in Penetrating Polish defences.

    My grandma vaguely remebers listening to the radio in her living room. She said she remebers being scared when the war began.

    My grandmother remembers watching t.v and wanteing to see it in color. She remembers when they got this plastic type material and would put it over the screen to make thepicture in color.
  • France surrenders to Germany

    There was a lot of resistance and conflict. It took 5 years to restore the peace.
  • Bombing of Pearl Harbor

    Japanese planes led a surprise attack on the americans at Pearl Harbor. The attack began at 7:55am and by 9:55am it was all over. Thousands were killed and planes and ships were destroyed.
  • "Paper, Paper, Read all about it!'

    My grandma remembers hearing the paper boy shout this as he brought the paper telling about Pearl Harbor. She remebers reading the paper with her family and wondering what will happen.
  • Battle of Midway

    Americans discovered a Japenese fleet northeast of Midway, a tiny island a thousand miles away from Hawaii. Americans had surprise and luck on their side. They took down most Japanese fighter planes and then destroyed their carriers. The Japanese retreated and the Americans now had the advantage.
  • West View Park

    West View was an amusement park. My grandma and he family would go for the day. Her mother would pack a basket of food and they would listen to music from bands that would play.
  • Battle of Stalingrad

    This battle was one of the most brutal during World War 2 and it lasted until February 2nd, 1943. That is when the Allies eventually one the battle.
  • Great Aunts house

    My grandma would go with her sisters to their great aunts house in New Castle. She had a cow named Betsie. She showed them how to milk it and let them help her.
  • Pensylvania Railroad

    My grandma's father worked as a conductor on the Pennsylvania Railroad. He lived at home but always got called out to do his job. She said she remebers him telling her stories about climbing on top of the freight trains and checking the brakes.
  • D Day

    D Day happened in just one day. The Allies gained control of Normany. Despite many casualties the soldiers were able to defeat Germany.
  • Allies Liberate Paris

    After being under control for four years, Paris finally became free. As the troops marched down the streets of Paris the crowds cheered for them.
  • Back to School

    When my grandma was in school, sometimes they would have to close the blinds because an air raid was going on. Also the nuns had to help them walk home from school if one was going on during that time.
  • Battle of the Bulge

    Hitler thought the alliance between Britain, France, and the United states was not strong and that amajor attack would break them up. He ordered a massive attack against what were mostly American forces. Despite punching a "bulge" into the Allies front line, Germany did not win the war.
  • Grandma receives a wonderful Christmas present

    For christmas my Grandma received a new toy that had just been invented. The toy was the slinky. She thought it was a fun to watch go down the stairs.
  • Valentine's Day

    In school my grandmother and pap made valentines for their classes. They made special valentine cards for the people they liked alot. They also had a Valentine's dance.
  • Iwo Jima

    A patrol of 40 men from the marines climbed up Mount Suribachi. When they reached the top the group of men placed a small flag in the ground to show they had captured it. Everyone saw the flag being raised and thats when the Japanese attacked. They killed and wounded 36 out of the 40 men. Charles Lingbergh was one of the men shot and a week later he died.
  • FDR Dies

    FDR died while in his home. He complained of a pain in the back of his head and then hen passed out. It was later revealed he died from cerebral hemorrhaging, otherwise known as a stroke. Harry S. Truman, his vice president then became the president.
  • Grandma's sisters birthday

    It was my Grandma's sister Dorothy's 11th birthday. Her family came for the special occasion.
  • Paps Birthday

    My pap turned 18 on this day. His family had a small party for him.
  • Hitler commits suicide

    The week before his death it was said that Hitler had a nervous breakdown during one of his military conferences, admitting Germany would lose the war. The day before he died he married a woman and signed a new will. The next day he killed him self by cyanide poisoning and then a gunshot to the head.
  • VE Day

    VE Day stands for Victory in Europe Day. Men and Women took to the streets to celbrate the war in Europe finally being over. The day before a German officer signed documents of unconditional surrender.
  • Pap Graduates from Highschool

    He graduated from Central Catholic Highschool in Oakland. After he worked for Sun-Drug Company.
  • Grandma's sister dies

    Her sister Patsy lived in California. They were having a picnic on the beach and when she was swimming the current was very strong and she drowned in the ocean. She was only 20.
  • Hiroshima

    Hiroshima was a city in Japan that had a large population and was an important military center for the Japanese. Early in the morning an American plane dropped the uranium bomb on Hiroshima. It was estimated 70,000 people were killed from the initial blast, heat, and radiation. Many more died from burns and the after effect of the radiation.
  • Nagasaki

    The actual target to drop the bomb on was Kokura Arsenal, a massive collection of war industries. The plane that was dropping the bomb had malfunctions which made him off of schedule. There was then too much smoke in the air and he could not see the town. There 2nd plan was the city of Nagasaki. The bomb was 40% greater then the bomb of Hiroshima.
  • Atomic Bomb

    My grandmother recalls watching television and seeing Nagasaki. She said she saw a huge cloud of smoke show up on the screen and it looked like a mushroom. She remembers hearing many people talk about it.
  • VJ Day

    VJ Day stands for Victory in Japan Day. Japan had surrendered unconditionally to the Allies. This day ended World War 2.
  • The war is over!!!

    My grandmother was only 12 when the war ended but she remembers my pap telling her that he went out and celebrated. He said he went out with all of his friends and got drunk. He said everyone was shouting and havinga great time.
