    I wonder how the country would be today if the German immigrants had been allowed to keep their language in public schools and hadn't assimilated like they did.     Founding of the AFT
    The American Federation of Teachers is founded. Working to protect the rights and pay of teachers across the country, the AFT played a large role in my life growing up. My mom, a single parent raising two sons, often relied on the protecting of the AFT in order to earn enough money to raise two kids in a safe and healthy environment.     Environmental issues constitute one of the most pressing areas in education. The founding of Earth Day was the beginning of bringing awareness of the environment and human impact upon it, which is more important than ever today and is a vital topic to discuss in school.
