  • The Common School

    The Common School
    During the 1830's the common school movement was brought up by Horace Mann. The movement was to promote equality in education or also known as Mann's idea of education being the great equalizer. This is a major event in education's history because people of different race, gender and social class are all given the same opportunity to a common school. During a time when women and people of color were seen as unequal, this was a huge step towards reducing conflict, and social class distinction.
  • Cardinal Principles

    Cardinal Principles
    This document created a change to the high school curriculum to better serve children in learning life skills and work ethic. For children who did not plan to attend college, this new curriculum would guide students to learn skills for future career selections, and focus on the students' plans after high school. This gave students more of a choice of what to focus their studies on which is important to better meet the needs of students after high school.
  • Desegregate Public Schools

    Desegregate Public Schools
    Desegregation of public schools is to eliminate the separation of people of color from schools. This is important to our nation's education because it brings our country closer together and provides equal opportunity for everyone, including people of color. This changed the formation of public schools and the views of African American's education. Everyone should be given the right to a free and equal education including people of color in the same community.
  • Children with Disabilities PL 94-142

    Children with Disabilities PL 94-142
    This law requires that children with disabilities are given the same educational opportunities as those without. This is an important aspect of education in supporting children with needs and how to help them progress developmentally. Every child deserves a chance to grow and learn including children with disabilities and their unique needs. This also gives normal developing children an opportunity to help and support those with disabilities. All are great learning experiences.

    NCLB
    The NCLB provides better learning opportunities for children in holding states and districts accountable for student achievement. This is important to ensure that children are receiving the best possible education they can. States and districts are being held responsible for hiring highly qualified teachers who are knowledgeable and can improve children's performance at each grade level. Children deserve the best possible education provided by highly qualified educators.
