  • George W. Bush Elected President

    In 2000 George W. Bush was elected the 43rd President of the United States. He ran as a Republican. He won the electoral votes but lost the popular vote to Al Gore.

    Afganstan War

    In 2001 President Bush signed into law a joint resolution that allowed the use of force on those responsible for the attack on 9/1. This caused measures to combat terrorism, including invading Afghanistan, eavesdropping on U.S. citizens without a court order, and standing up the detention camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. In 2014, President Obama pulled troops out of Afghanistan, effectively ending active conflict.

  • September 11, 2001

    September 11, 2001
    A terrorist attack occurred in the United States where extremists hijacked commercial airplanes and most notably crashed them into the Twin Towers in New York City. Other planes crashed into the Pentagon in Virginia and another crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. It was all caught on video and shook the nation.

    YouTube
    YouTube was launched in 2005 and has become the most successful and largest video-sharing platform across the globe. Across the years many content creators have become household names and the platform has become a cornerstone of education.

  • Ally moves to Florida

    My Family made the move to Jacksonville Florida in the middle of 1st grade.
  • The iPhone

    The release of the iPhone changed our perception of technology and how we use it. The world was officially at our fingertips with this new style of tech.
  • The Great Recssion

    As it is aptly named the Great Recession is one of the most severe economic down turns since the Great Depression. Resulting from a housing market crash and other poor banking practices the economy tanked and major unemployment occurred.
  • Barack Obama Elected

    In 2008 Barack Obama became the 44th President. His election was a landmark moment in American history as he was the first African American to hold the highest office in the land.
  • Syrian Refugee Crisis

    Syrian Refugee Crisis
    A conflict in Syria left many Syrians displaced. It is one of the largest humanitarian crises with hunger being a main issue. Many countries took in refugees, while the U.S. placed a ban on the entry of refugees during Donald Trump's presidency.

  • UK left the EU

    In 2016 a controversial decision made by the UK government led to its departure from the European Union. Colloquially termed Brexit, members of the conservative party thought the country would be better off monetarily and keep its sovereignty. Most Britains have reported they are worse off post-Brexit.

  • Donald Trump Elected

    This election was a tumultuous one and the first election I participated in. The campaign against Hillary Clinton was close and she won the Popular vote, but the Electoral College declared Donald Trump the winner, paralleling the 2000 Presidential election. This election caused protests across the nation and people started to question the purpose of the Electoral College.
  • Covid-19

    Covid-19
    A global pandemic calling back to the Spanish Flu put the world on pause. Travel all but stopped and people were made to shelter in their homes to prevent the spread of this infection. The death rate of this pandemic was/is high and caused fear. The way we interacted with our world completely changed as work and school went digital.
  • Black Lives Matter Movement

    Black Lives Matter Movement
    The Black Lives Matter movement is an ongoing response to racial injustice in America. A moment building from years prior came to a head at the murder of George Floyd resulting from police brutality. Even during the pandemic, thousands took to the streets to protest violence against the black community.

  • Joe Biden Elected

    This was a major election as it was a campaign to get Donald Trump out of office. This election was during a global pandemic and made the voting process more challenging with mail-in ballots. Because of the high volume of mail-in ballots a voter fraud conspiracy took hold. Voting rights changed after this election.
  • Ally Got her license!

    A milestone achievement for me as I finally got my driver's license.
  • Ally Graduated with her Film Degree

    After 20 months of study and hands-on work, as well as a global pandemic, I received my Bachelor of Science in Film.
  • Queen Elizabeth Died

    An end of an era as the UK's longest reigning Queen passed away at 96. She saw the world change and grow post the devastation of WWII to the modern world we know. She reigned for 70 years
  • Roe vs. Wade Overturned

    In a controversial decision the Supreme Court reversed Roe v. Wade. Rescinding the constitutional right to an abortion and giving the states the power to amend laws regarding the issue. This caused a huge rift on both sides of the issue. States wrote severely restrictive laws reproductive rights as a result.

  • Ally witnesses Parisian Protests

    Ally witnesses Parisian Protests
    During my visit to Paris in March of 2023 I got to see how French citizens exercise their rights. A controversial act was passed without a vote to raise the retirement age and reduce the pension for retirement. This caused a massive movement of protests and riots in the city of Paris. It was a powerful and intimidating time to be in the country.
