Winston journals about the first time he had sex. He feels guilty about the encounter, and gets frustrated as he writes about it. He hired a prostitute, knowing the act was forbidden. Sex is strongly discouraged in this world, and must always be joyless. -

Winston Recalls Katharine
Winston remembers that he is married to a woman named Katharine, and the relationship becomes intolerable. Separation is unlawful, and against the rules. Katherine is completely incapable of original thoughts, and has strong belief in The Party. -

Winston wants more
Winston urnes for love, and a more intimate relationship. He starts to think about how sex could be more than just an joyless act, and is curious about it. -

Winston rebels
The unlawful act of sex is considered rebellious, and ugly. Orwell lets the readers know that Winston is rebelling against The Party, and it creates curiosity in wether Winston will get caught by Big Brother or not.
