The Great Depression: 1921-1941

  • Immigration Act

    The Immigration Act reduced the number of immigrants allowed into America, and actually prohibited all Chinese from entering the United States.
  • Scope's Trial

    Also known as the Monkey Trial, a substitute teacher was accused of teaching Darwinism in a Tennessee school, which violated the Butler Act. The Butler Act made it illegal to teach human evolution in public schools. Scopes was found guilty.
  • Stock Market Crash

    The stock market crash began on October 24th and lasted until the 29th. Share prices in the New York Stock Exchange collapsed. This was the beginning of the Great Depression.
  • Smoot-Hawley Tariff

    This act raised tariffs on over 20,000 imported goods in America. This worsened the Great Depression.
  • The New Deal

    President Franklin D. Roosevelt implemented a series of programs during the Great Depression to try and help raise prosperity in America and boost the economy again. It gave relief, recovery, and reform to Americans. The New Deal spent money on public works and agricultural programs, enabling increased employment.
  • The WPA

    The Works Progress Administration was part of the New Deal. It employed millions of people to carry out public works projects, including building public buildings and roads.
  • The Social Security Act

    The Social Security Act was a part of the New Deal as well. It established a system of old-age benefits for workers, benefits for victims of industrial accidents, unemployment insurance, aid for dependent mothers and children, the blind, and the physically handicapped.
  • WWII Begins

    The war began in Europe when Germany attacked Poland and the Prime Minister of Britain declared war on Germany.
  • Pearl Harbor

    The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise Japanese bombing. They destroyed 20 American naval vessels and over 300 airplanes. Ovre 2,400 Americans were killed and over 1,000 were injured. The very next day, the United States declared war on Japan.
