1900-1920: The First World War

  • Theodore Roosevelt Becomes President

    Teddy Roosevelt became the 26th president in 1901, and he served until 1909.
  • The Sixteenth Amendment

    The Sixteenth Amendment gave Congress the right to establish a federal income tax.
  • WWI Begins

    World War 1 began after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The war was fought between the Allied Powers and the Central Powers. The Allied Powers were France, Russia, and Britain. The United States joined the Allies after 1917. The Central Powers included Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria.
  • Lusitania Sunk

    The British ocean liner Lusitania was sunk by German U-Boats. 1,198 people died including 128 Americans. The United States intervened and forced German to stop unrestricted submarine warfare.
  • The U.S. Joins the War

    The United States finally joined the war after Germany resumed unrestricted warfare in war-zone waters.
  • WWI Ends

    Germany surrendered on November 11th. The Allied Nations and Germany all signed the Treaty of Versailles, which ended the war.
  • The Eighteenth Amendment

    The 18th Amendment prohibited the making, transporting, and selling of alcohol. This was the time of prohibition.
  • The Nineteenth Amendment

    The 19th Amendment gave ALL women the right to vote. It prohibits the states from denying the right to vote on the basis of sex.
