1876-1900: The Industrial Age

  • The Indian Reservation

    The United States forced all Native Americans to move to Indian reservations across the country in order to make room for new settlers and keep Native American violence under control.
  • The First Telephone Call

    Alexander Grahm Bell, the inventor of the telephone, made the very first phone call to Thomas Watson.
  • The Great Railroad Strike

    The strike began on July 14 in Martinsburg, West Virginia. Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (B&O) cut the wages of workers for the third time in a year. Striking workers would not allow any of the trains to go through until the third wage cut was revoked.
  • The Exclusion Act

    The United States Congress passed the Exclusion Act which prohibited the immigration of Chinese labor workers for a certain amount of time.
  • Coca Cola Invented

    John S Pemberton invented Coca Cola and tried it out on his customers at his pharmacy in Atlanta, Georgia. It became an immediate success.
  • The American Federation of Labor

    Samuel Gompers founded the AFL. It was a national federation of labor unions in the United States that disaffected from the Knights of Labor.
  • The Homestead Strike Battle

    A group of steelworkers from the Carnegie Steel Company went on strike on June 1st. This resulted in a violent battle between the workers and private security agents from June 30th to July 6th.
  • The First Ford

    Henry Ford invents his first automobile called the Quadricycle.
  • Annexation of Hawaii

    The United States annexed Hawaii and made it a territory in 1900.
  • The Spanish-American War

    Violence between the United States and Spain began after the explosion of USS Maine in Havana harbor in Cuba. The United States then decided an intervention in the Cuban War of Independence was necessary. The result of the war was the Treaty of Paris in 1898 and an American victory.
