The incident almost killed Sumner and contributed to the ideas on the issue of the slavery issue. It is symbolic of how violence was used in the disagreements. -
John Brown
John Brown lead the Pottawatomie Massacre that murdered five proslavery men. This contributed to the civil war because it was the beginning of Bleeding Kansas. -
Election of 1856
The Democrats were scared that if the Republican party was elected then it would start a civil war. They thought this because they did not agree with the Missouri Compromise through the Kansas Nebraska Act, which let the people decide if the new state was a free or slave state with popular sovereignty. This lead to the civil war because of the debate of slavery between the Democrats and the Republicans. -
LeCompton Constitution
The Constitution was a very controversial document because it allowed slavery in places that most people opposed it. It also gave the option that either slavery would be allowed in Kansas or that slavery existed there but no more slaves could be brought in. It constituted to the civil war because they did not agree with the option of slavery. -
Dred Scott
The Dred Scott vs. Sandford helped lead to the civil war because it went against the agreement between people about the difference between slave and free states. This made the nation angry at each other. -
House Divided Speech
Lincolns speech was intended to address the people about the divisions of the nation. Lincoln explained that if the United States wanted to be free they needed to start now. His speech did not help prevent the Civil War as he thought. -

John Brown lead a small group on a raid against a federal armory in Harpers Ferry. He raided in an attempt to start an armed revolt of enslaved people to end slavery. -

The secession lead to the creation of the Confederacy, which lead to the Civil War. -
Lincolns 1st inaugural Address
Lincoln opposed to slavery, and when he was elected it resulted in Civil War. When he was elected he did not think that any resolution would make the south seceded from the Union.
