    In the Colony of NSW men still outnumber women by an estimated 20 to 1
  • 1810

    There are now nearly 12,000 white people in the colnies of NSW and Van Diemen's Land.
  • 1820

    There are an estimated 24,000 white people in NSW.
  • 1840

    Transportation to Van Diemens Land is put on hold for two years, as too many convicts flooding into the colony, and the system is at breaking point.
  • 1850

    British Government gives in to popular demand and separates the new colony of Victoria from NSW.
  • 1860

    Victoria alone holds more people than its gold-rush rival, California.
  • 1870

    In Victoria a 'free, compulsory and secular' Education Act passed. All children over 6 must go to school

    Governor bourke of NSW introduces annual squatting license fees to regulate land use, and to try and stop squatters from killing indigenous Australians

    On the 17th of September, Queen Victoria proclaimes the Commonweath of Autralia.
