    This document declared that America was no longer up for colonization. The US did little to enforce this, though.

    China and Britain clash in the Opium War
    The Qing Emperor was angry about the British smuggling opium into his country, when the british don't even allow it in their own country. One of the Qing emperor's highest advisors wrote a letter to the British and they refused to stop. This led to the Opium War.
  • Commodore Perry enters the Tokyo Harbor

    Commodore Perry enters the Tokyo Harbor
    U.S. Copmmodore Perry took four ships into the Tokyo Harbor. They were massive black wooden ships with cannons, an item the Japanese had never seen before. They also came with a letter asking for free trade . They would come back with a larger fleet to receive Japan's reply.

    US wins Spanish American War
    Cuba was fighting Spain for its independence. Then the Cubans gave up. Then Jose Marti, launched a second war. Though Marti was killed early in the war, the Cubans kept fighting. Then the Spanish were brutal to the Cubans, outranging the Americans. So the US joined the Cubans. The US strategically launched thier first attack on the Phillipean Islands who were unprepared for war, allowing the US to win.

    Mexican Revolution Begins
    The first major leader for the revolution was Juarez with La Reforma. But Juarez died of a heart attack. This is when Diaz took over. He pregressed the cpuntry, but did not help the La Reforma because Juarez did not reward Diaz for his being a noted general. Then Madero emerged, but was arrested by Diaz. Madero called for an armed revolution. Other leaders also emerged; Villa, Zapata, Carranza, and Obregon.

    Panama Canal Opens
    The French tried and failed to build a canal to connect oceans, but failed. President Roosevelt encouraged the building of this canal so he decided to campaign for it. Despite the set-back of the diseases killing thousands of workers, a cure was found and the Panama Canal was finished.
