Herbert Hoover takes Office.
Herbert Hoover takes office in 1929, becoming the 31st president. He only serves one term, losing to Franklin D. Roosevelt. Because of the downward spiral of the economy he lost by many votes. But he was also one of two people to be voted into office with no other political experience. -
Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC)
The Reconstruction Finance Corporation was a government ran corporation. The corporation was started to give 2 billion dollars to aid states, local governments, banks and other businesses through the hard times of the depression. This played a big part in helping set up relief programs for the United States. -
The Bonus Army
Many World War I Veterans took the long journey to Washington D.C to rally. They did this so in the hard times of the depression they could get their money from being in the war at the time instead of in 1945. The bill was vetoed and then the riot was broken up by the army called on by the president. Many people were injured and 4 men were killed. -
Hitler Takes Power
Hitler becomes the Chancellor of Germany. Then in August 1934 when President Hindenburg had died, Hitler has claimed himself as the leader of Germany. He then remained in office until he committed suicide April 30, 1945. -
Roosevelt Elected
Many people voted for Roosevelt because he was a change of Hoover’s shaky choices, and because many people thought that is was Hoover's fault that the Great Depression happened. Roosevelt stayed in office until April 2, 1945. -
The New Deal
The New Deal was a series of economic programs. It was really taken into a major deal when Franklin Roosevelt was president. It helped many people and companies get back on their feet durring the depression. -
Indian Reorganization Act
This act was an act to reverse the Dawes Act. The Indian Reorganization Act allowed the privatization of common holdings of Indians and it allowed them to go back to self-governing the tribe. -
Father Coughlin attacks FDR, Jews
Father Coughling was one of the fist priests and political speaker to be heard on radio to have mass audiences. Coughlin started with agreeing with Franklin Roosevelt but by the end of his political career he was against Roosevelt and blaming the Jews for everything. -
The Dust Bowl
The Dust Bowl was the area of land that was so dry that dust storm would come by and pick up the top soil and wreck the farmers land. Many farmers moved out to the cities. While others stuck it out and lived with the dust storms. -
Social Security Act
President Roosevelt sent a message to Congress on June 8, 1934, with an idea for a Social Security system. The Congress took the idea and it didn't become a true act until August 14th 1935, and we still have Social Security today. -
Neutrality Act of 1935
The Neutrality Act was a series of acts passed in 1935, 1936, 1937, and 1939. The Neutrality Act of 1935 was to constrain the exports of arms, ammunition, and implements of war to agressive coutries in war. -
GM Sit-down Strike
This strike started when a worker overheard the management talking about closing the plant because the plant was already on strike. Well the union had a meeting that day and planned the sit down strike. The sit-down strike lasted until February 1937. -
Social Security
Social Security is insurance that is funded through payroll. The taxes are taken and put into the OASDI or the RSDI. The idea of Social Security was started by Franklin Roosevelt when he first became president, it was also part of the New Deal the Roosevelt started. -
Rape of Nanjing
The Rape of Nanjing was a mass murder in the city of Nanjing, China. The Japanese, invaded for over 6 weeks. It is called the Rape of Nanjing because of the 20,000- 80,000 of women who were raped by the Japanese soldiers. -
The Grapes of Wrath
The Grapes of Wrath is a novel set in the time of the great depression. It is written by John Steinbeck, he got the working class on his side. The effect of the book was like The Jungle in the 1900.
