    Rachel Carson published her book Silent Spring. This book was said to be founder of the modern environmentalist movement, and received wide attraction. Due to how it focused on chemicals, people began questioning the chemical industry, to which JFK created a commission to study pesticides.

    On this day, many people gather to hear people talk about environmentalism and how ordinary people can change their lifestyles to help protect the environment.
    The Clean Air Act is passed in 1970. This act set up a federal law that regulates air emissions from things, such as vehicles, and industries as well.
  • 1980

    On March 24th, 1989, the Exxon Valdez oil tanker collided with a reef and spilled millions of gallons into the ocean. As a result, many marine life and birds were affected and later died. This was the 2nd largest oil spill in all of history, only toppled today by the BP oil spill.

    The Oil Pollution Act is passed in 1990, just a little less than a year after the Exxon oil spill occurred. This strengthened the federal governments abilities and powers to prevent oil spills from occurring
    The Pollution Prevention Act is also passed in 1990. The act focused on cost-effective changes that industries and businesses could make that could reduce pollution as well as improving business at the same time.

    The BP Oil Spill occurred on April 20th, 2010. This was the largest oil spill of all time and caused many marine life and birds as well to die. It took nearly a month to finally cause the spill to stop, and the public was shocked as to how this could have occurred.
