05.04 Understanding 20th Century Poetry

  • Upton Sinclair and Modernism movement

    The 1900's was focused on humans and how they think. Mainly emphasizing new thoughts and ideas that challenge the status- quo. Authors such as Ezra Pound helped progress the Modernism movement in the late 19th and early 20th century.
    Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" published in 1906 focused on the harsh conditions immigrants faced in the U.S., specifically Chicago.
  • Sinclair Lewis and Women's Suffrage

    "The Job" by Sinclair Lewis was published in 1917, it acted as an early decree of women's rights.
    In this time women started to go out of the norm of gender roles more and more, in relationship to speaking their mind and fighting for the right to vote.
  • T.S. Eliot and the Harlem Renaissance

    This poem "The Waste Land" by T.S. Eliot uses the idea of disillusionment in society and of the modern world.
    Most literature in this time period reflected views presented by the Harlem Renaissance.
  • Robert Frost and Stock Market

    Robert Frost's "A Further Range" is a pessimistic and depressing literary work that reflects the many troubles the world faces.
    For example, the stock market crash, WWII, and the Spanish Civil War all happened around this time.
